this and that.

I can’t remember the last time I stayed up all night. All I know is it’s been a looooooooooong time since then. I don’t like staying up all night. I like sleep. Very much. But tonight is not a night for sleep.

Tonight was my last night with my squad. It was a night full of surprises and love and laughter (and tears)- it was perfect. But I can’t write about it right now. I’m too tired.

It’s nearly 3 a.m. and I leave in an hour to go to the airport. I still need to shower and pack, of course.

By noon I’ll be in Venice, Italy. God is whisking me away for himself. Together we’re going to read poetry and eat pasta and wander the streets for hours. It’s our honeymoon.

Okay. Time to shower.

See you in two weeks.

  6. hey, I visited Venice last month! (on my birthday, no less) i was by myself, but three backpackers in my hostel invited me to join them for the day, so I did. none of use knew each other from Adam: one was a bubbly Mexican girl, another a silent Columbian, the third a real comic, seems he was Korean Canadian, and then there was old me: a boring Yankee. good times 🙂 I’d be curious what you thought of Venice?

Hi, Nick! That’s super cool that you *also* went to Venice by yourself – wouldn’t it have been crazy if we were there at the same time and ran into each other? Anyway.

I loved and hated Venice – loved it because it was completely charming, hated it because a) my feet hurt from walking so much/getting lost 2) too many expensive, touristy restaurants (I couldn’t seem to find anywhere local to eat!) and 3) lack of public toilets! haha.

      What did you think??

      • Venice was quaint, romantic, scenic and I’ve always wanted to visit since I was little and saw pictures of the canals in a schoolbook – Venice totally captured my imagination! However, like you pointed out, reality isn’t always as rosy as our expectations… For one thing, I found Venetians rude (though other Italians I met seemed nice enough) and the pizza was equally disappointing (and expensive), though at least didn’t have sliced hotdogs for a topping (like the pizza I ate last night).

My arrival to Venice was slightly traumatic. When I arrived by plane around 11pm that night, I was already exhausted. Alas, it wasn’t until after 2am I arrived at my hostel! During those three long hours “hostel-searching,” I stressfully navigated two public busses, a personal car-ride from a Venetian, help from guys outside a casino, a ferry ride to an island, and wandered around in the middle of the night through sketchy canal-neighborhoods, finally given the correct directions by a few half-drunks outside a bar that had just closed down. Need I say more? Yes, at least two things more: 1) I am quite hopelessly challenged when it comes to directions, and 2) upon arriving at my hostel I was literally yelled at up and down by the owner for having woken him up so late! Oops, sorry man.

In short, Venice was great! I got several stellar photos, but didn’t get to go swimming.

Where was your favorite place in all of Italy??
